Cash on Delivery on Shopify in the UAE: fees, emirates, and card-at-the-door
Updated · ACOD (E-TRADE PARTNER)
UAE customers expect a pay-on-delivery option, and UAE couriers (Aramex, Quiqup, Jeebly, Emirates Post and others) charge merchants for cash handling — so the standard setup is a 10–15 AED COD fee charged through a linked shipping rate, optionally split into two pay-on-delivery variants (cash vs card at the door), with COD limited to serviceable emirates and capped by order value.
COD in the UAE
The UAE is card-mature by regional standards, but pay-on-delivery remains a strong preference — partly trust, partly habit from the regional players who made COD standard. Couriers charge per-shipment COD handling fees and many offer card terminals at the door, which changes the setup: “pay on delivery” isn't necessarily cash.
The 10 AED fee setup
“When the user selects COD, add 10 AED automatically” is one of the exact questions from our support archive — and the answer is the linked-rate model: create a shipping rate “Cash on Delivery (+10 AED)” in your UAE zone, link it to the COD payment method in ACOD, and the fee applies only when COD is chosen. Different fee in your GCC zones? Rates are per-zone — set each amount independently.
Cash vs card at the door
If your courier offers both, run two linked rates: “Pay on delivery — cash (+12 AED)” and “Pay on delivery — card (+8 AED)”, with the manual payment method renamed to a generic “Pay on delivery”. Customers self-select, each variant carries its own fee, and the order tells dispatch which service to book. This two-variant setup is ACOD's specialty — full walkthrough.
Emirate-level control and caps
- Remote-area surcharges: if deliveries outside Dubai/Abu Dhabi/Sharjah metros cost more, price the COD rate per zone, or use state/city conditions to limit COD to serviceable emirates.
- Order-value cap — couriers cap cash collection per parcel; mirror that cap at checkout (how) so you never take a COD order you can't ship as COD.
- International orders — country allowlist: COD for the UAE (or UAE + KSA if your courier collects there), prepaid for the rest of the world.

›How do I add a 10 AED COD fee on Shopify?
Create a shipping rate priced at 10 AED in your UAE zone and link it to the Cash on Delivery payment method with ACOD. The fee applies only when the customer picks COD.
›Can I offer both cash and card on delivery with different fees?
Yes — one linked rate per variant, each with its own fee; rename the manual payment method to “Pay on delivery”. Shopify only allows one manual COD method, but the variants live on the shipping side.
›Can I limit COD to Dubai and Abu Dhabi only?
Yes — a city or state/emirate condition in ACOD restricts COD to the areas you list; everywhere else checks out prepaid.
